ENGLISH INVENTIONS

 

 You know that England is known as the empire on which the sun never sets, therefore; it has so many effect on every thing such as science, literature, theatre, sport.
Today, we will talk about the most important and interesting inventions of this country.

 

The Vacuum Cleaner

 Hubert Cecil Booth was a British engineer.He invented the vacuum cleaner.

 In 1900, Booth saw that if you put a handkerchief between your mouth and the floor, you can inhale dust from the carpet.žWhen he saw this, he wanted to invent something get out the dust.
 
The Washing Machine
 
ž In 1782, Henry Sidgier invented the washing machine.

 
ž One of the first innovations in washing machine technology was the use of enclosed containers that had grooves, fingers to scrub the clothes.

The Crossword Puzzle
 
ž Arthur Wynne was the British-born inventor of the modern crossword puzzle in 1913.

 
The Fire Extinguisher
 
ž The modern fire extinguisher was invented by British Captain George William Manby in 1818.
     
 
The Baby Carriage
 
ž William Kent was an English architect.žWilliam Kent developed the first stroller in 1733.
       

 
ž The Duke of Devonshire asked Kent to build a transport that would carry his children.žKent obliged by constructing a shell shaped basket on wheels that the children could sit in.

 
The Electrical Telegraph
 
ž The electrical telegraph system was invented by William Fothergill Cooke and Charles Wheatstone in 1830.

ž The first modern dishwasher was invented by  William Howard Livens in 1924.
          

 
Gravity
ž Sir Issac Newton discovered gravity three centuries ago.žMany people have the image that he was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell and hit him on the head, thus giving him the idea for gravity.
 
The Apple Pie
 
ž The first written apple pie recipe goes back to 1381 in England.ž It was printed by Geoffrey Chaucer and included apples, figs, raisins, pears and a pastry shell.

 
 
Fish and Chips
 
ž Fish and chips is a hot dish of English origin.žIt is a common take-away food.žFried fish was probably first introduced into Britain during the Roman period.žIn 1860, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin.
 
The Sandwich
ž The modern sandwich is named after Lord Sandwich. (John Montagu) in 1770.
ž According to the story,
  Lord Sandwich was a very conversant gambler, and he did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. Consequently, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread
  The exact circumstances of its invention and original use are still uncertain.

 
The Yorkshire Pudding
ž Yorkshire pudding is an English dish made from batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk or water.žAn early recipe appeared in Alexander Cassey's The Whole Duty of a Woman in 1737.žThe dish is sometimes served with beef and gravy.žIt may also be served as a dessert.
